Watch of the Week - The Watch Roll

Watch enthusiasts and collectors like you, and I don’t want to limit ourselves in terms of the watches we are fortunate enough to own. We wish to acquire all the pieces we dream about, big or small. In a world I hope we never have to live in where we are only limited to three, here are my picks that will get you by in most situations you will find yourself in.

First would be an everyday watch, something you can kick around and not be too worried about. From cooking and Christmas tree cutting to the occasional dip after a hike on a hot summer day, the watch best suited for this would be a Rolex GMT Master or Master ii. Depending on how adventurous you are in terms of your style and everyday wardrobe, there are an array of different bezel and dial combinations out there. A sleek black dial black bezel to a meteorite dial with a pepsi bezel and everything in between. There are also some vintage references, like the 1675 with its Pepsi bezel and Gilt dial. If you are working with your hands or in the kitchen, I would lean more towards the modern steel options as these are absolute workhorses that you can beat around and enjoy. Just put it on and go about your day, throw it on the nightstand, and repeat.

The next watch would be a dress watch. For an anniversary, wedding, or board meeting, something to wear with a suit for your more formal outings. My pick would be a Cartier Tank on a leather strap. Like the GMT you can pick your poison when it comes to combinations and metal types. From a classic Tank Louis to an Américaine with its elongated case shape. These watches are timeless and will always be in style. Thin and elegant, it is perfect for slipping under a cuff and flying under the radar. They also come in a wide range of prices depending on what you’re looking for. From a steel case and quartz movement in the Tank Solo to a solid yellow gold Tank Louis paired with an automatic movement. They wear unbelievably well and are extremely flattering, in my eyes, the perfect dress watches.

The final category is going to be a fun watch. Something to wear on the weekends, vacation, or just looking to add a little flair to that day’s ensemble. My pick to wrap up the watch roll will be a Rolex Daytona. My personal favorite is the platinum Daytona reference 126506 with baguette hour markers. I’ve never been a huge fan of diamonds when it comes to watches, but this example is just stunning and not overdone like some other factory-set diamond pieces you will come across. It’s quite subtle and fits this watch perfectly. A more subdued reference being the 126500ln “Panda,” as it is known, is a white dial with a black ceramic bezel and black sub-dials, a very popular choice in the Daytona lineup.

These are my picks for the ultimate watch roll, but if you are not a Rolex or Cartier fan, there are many different brands and models to choose from. Other examples for each category include the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak for the everyday, Patek Phillippe Calatrava for your formal piece, and an Omega Speedmaster for your weekend watch
